Payment Methods
You can offer various flexible payment methods to your payers with the Mastercard Gateway.
The supported payment methods can be divided into the following categories:
- Card payments
Card payments involve the use of physical or virtual payment cards, such as credit or debit cards. The cards are primarily issued by financial institutions and linked to a cardholder's bank account.
To make an online card payment, the payer typically provides the card details manually. The payment is processed through the card network, such as Mastercard or Visa.
- Mobile wallets
Mobile wallets, such as Apple Pay and Google Pay, are digital apps that store various forms of payment methods, including credit cards, debit cards, and bank account information. Payers can make payments by linking these sources to the mobile wallet app.
To make a mobile wallet payment, the payer opens the mobile wallet app, selects the payment method, and holds the mobile device near a compatible point-of-sale terminal or scans a QR code.
- Alternative payment methods
Alternative payment methods encompass a wide range of non-traditional payment options, such as PayPal and SEPA.
Many of alternative payment methods are browser-based, which means that when the payer wants to use them, you redirect the payer to the payment method provider’s site, where the payer can select the payment details to proceed.
Each payment method has its own payment options and unique characteristics. The availability of alternative payment methods varies significantly, each being popular in specific countries or industries.
